Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read and write. It helps children hear, identify and use different sounds that distinguish one word from another in the English language. Evidence shows that a systematic approach to teaching phonics is the best way to ensure pupils secure the knowledge and skills needed when learning to read.
At Brampton, we use Ruth Miskin’s Read Write Inc. phonics from Reception onwards since 2017 to ensure pupils get off to a great start with their reading. More information about the Read Write Inc. approach can be found here:

Pupils are assessed upon entry in Reception as part of our baseline assessment to determine their prior phonic knowledge and skills as some will have been taught the initial sounds before starting primary school. They are then grouped from Reception to Year 2, according to their stage of reading. Pupils receive a daily phonics lesson for 30 minutes as well as regular opportunities to reinforce the sounds. They learn three sets of sounds and read books matched to the set they are learning. Most pupils complete the scheme by or in Year 2, having become confident readers. For those who need more support, we provided group and 1:1 interventions to ensure they do not fall behind in reading.
To ensure parents/carers feel confident in supporting their child in phonics, we offer parent/carer workshops throughout the year and upon request.
